How to Discourage AI Crawlers from Accessing Your Zibster Website

Overview

AI services such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Meta AI use automated web crawlers to access publicly available website content. Depending on the service, this information may be used for AI training, search results, or other AI-powered features.

If you prefer to discourage AI crawlers from accessing your Zibster website, you can add HTML meta tags that communicate your preferences to specific services.

Important: These meta tags are not confirmed or officially supported opt-out methods for the AI services mentioned in this guide. Adding them does not guarantee that your website, images, or other content will be excluded from AI crawling, indexing, or training.

This guide explains how to add crawler-specific meta tags using your Zibster Website Builder's Tracking settings.

STEP ONE

Log in to your Zibster account and click WEBSITE in the left-side menu.

This opens your Website Builder, where you can manage your website pages, design, SEO, and tracking settings.

STEP TWO

Click TRACKING at the top of your Website Builder.

This opens your website's global tracking settings, where you can manage your sitemap, website title, analytics, and more.

STEP THREE

Copy the AI Crawler Meta Tags

Copy the code below to add three AI crawler-specific meta tags to your website. These tags are intended to communicate your preference to discourage crawling by OpenAI (ChatGPT), Anthropic (Claude), and Meta (Facebook and Instagram).

STEP FOUR

Add the Meta Tags to Your Website

In your TRACKING settings, locate the HEAD code field.

Paste your selected meta tags into this field.

If you already have Google Analytics tracking scripts, Google Search Console verification codes, or other custom HTML code in the HEAD section, leave those in place.

You can add the new meta tags above or below your existing code without removing or modifying the other scripts.

FINAL STEP

Save Your Changes

Click SAVE CHANGES to apply the meta tags to your Zibster website.

Once saved, the tags are included in your website's HEAD code, where automated crawlers that inspect the page's HTML may encounter them.

Your changes take effect automatically. No additional publishing step is required.

Important: Successfully adding the tags does not mean that an AI service has recognized or honored your request.

What Your Website Visitors See

Adding these meta tags does not change the visible appearance of your Zibster website.

Visitors can continue to browse your pages, view your images, contact your business, and use your website normally.

The tags are intended for automated crawlers rather than human visitors. They do not prevent people from accessing, downloading, or sharing publicly available website content.

Because support for these specific tags is not confirmed, they should not be relied upon to prevent your content from appearing in AI-generated responses or being used for AI training.

Helpful Notes

Will these tags prevent my images from being used for AI training?

Not necessarily. These tags communicate a preference but do not technically prevent automated systems from accessing or downloading your images.

They also cannot reverse the collection or use of content that has already occurred.

Will adding these tags affect my Google search rankings?

The examples in this guide target specific AI crawler names rather than Google's standard search crawler.

Google does not document these particular crawler names as supported Google-specific directives, so they are not expected to change your Google Search indexing or rankings.

Avoid adding a general robots meta tag containing noindex unless you specifically want to prevent supporting search engines from indexing your website.

What do noindex and nofollow mean?

  • noindex: Requests that a supporting crawler not include a webpage in its search index.

  • nofollow: Requests that a supporting crawler not follow links found on the webpage.

These directives do not physically block website access or establish restrictions on AI model training. They only work when a crawler recognizes and honors them.
