How to Add SRV Records for Custom Services in Zibster

If your domain’s DNS is managed through Zibster using AWS Route 53 name servers, you can add SRV records directly from your account. These records are typically used to connect your domain to third-party services like VoIP, messaging platforms, or communication tools that require service-based routing (such as Microsoft Teams or Skype for Business).

What Is an SRV Record?
An SRV (Service) record is a type of DNS entry that tells external services where to route traffic for a specific function. It includes the target server's hostname, the port to use, and service-specific details. You’ll usually need to add one when working with communication or messaging platforms.

Important Notes:

  • This feature is only available if your name servers are pointed to Zibster’s Route 53 (AWS) system.

  • If your domain is using legacy name servers at Rackspace, DNS editing will not be available in your account.

DNS Changes May Take Time

While most DNS updates take effect within a few minutes, it can take up to 48 hours for changes to fully propagate across the internet.

STEP ONE

Access Your DNS Records

  • Log into your Zibster account.

  • Click DOMAINS in the left-hand menu.

STEP TWO

Open the DNS Zone Editor

  • Click the MANAGE DNS button next to your connected domain.

STEP THREE

Add a New SRV Record

  • Click the NEW DNS RECORD button.

  • Choose SRV as the record type.

STEP FOUR

Enter the SRV Record Details
Your service provider will give you the exact details to enter. SRV records typically include the following fields:

  • Service: The name of the service (e.g., _sip)

  • Protocol: Usually _tcp or _udp

  • Name: The domain or subdomain this record applies to

  • Priority: Lower values indicate higher priority

  • Weight: Used for load balancing (often 0)

  • Port: The port number the service uses (e.g., 5060)

  • Target: The server hostname the service should point to

⚠️ Make sure to enter everything exactly as provided. Typos or incorrect values can prevent your service from connecting properly.

THAT’S IT
